"Canada Forest" and nearby mountains

Saturday, January 06

A wooded hillside in Bergen West is called Canada Forest, "Kanadaskogen". The forest, mostly pines and some marsh, is very close to a suburb of Bergen called Fyllingsdalen ("-dalen" = valley), counting about 20.000 inhabitants.

We leave the car and start walking in Nordnæsdalen. This place deserve som words. A sports ground and several redpaintet huts are located in in the forest. We know that this ground is owned by a buekorps called Nordnæs Bataillon. Here young boys can practice their sport activities and develop friendship in this unike and very traditional kind of organisation, typical for the City of Bergen.

Still waiting for snow we follow a path in direction of Viggohytten, a small cabin open for for hikers on sundays.

Today is saturday, and we continue upwards to have a view back down from the hills around the forest. At the highest point called Olsokfjellet the sun is breaking through the clouds by the coast. In foreground is the valley, hidden behind mountain hills for visitors who just visit the central parts of the city.

The City of Bergen can be seen from another hill nearby called Damsgårdsfjellet (350 m), one of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen. Today two of the Norwegian Coastal Voyage ships "Hurtigruten" appears on the harbour.

The signboards shows different pathways both up and down, but the distance is not given. We have to return through the forest before dark, but that was no problem this time.
